Earlier this week I decided to go to Game Stop and preorder a Nintendo 3DS. Despite the fact I am a big Nintendo fan, I was actually very much undecided if I actually wanted to buy one right away. Ever since it was showed off at E3 I was ready to buy it day one. However, between then and now two big problems with the 3DS arose.
First off, the launch list for the 3DS is really weak. I still have no idea what game I’m going to get. Right now, I’m thinking of getting either Pilotwings Resort or Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. If I’m feeling adventurous, I might buy Dead or Alive Dimensions or Samurai Warriors Chronicles. The only problem is that I’m not very good at fighting games. On the bright side, I do enjoy playing fighting games regardless.
The second, and bigger, problem is the 3DS’s battery life. It’s being reported that the battery will only last for 3 to 5 hours. For a handheld, that is a really big problem. My hope is that it won’t become that big a deal for me. Also Nintendo has a nasty habit of releasing new versions of the same handheld console. Fortunately the way things look; it appears that Nintendo has (hopefully) no plans to release a 3DS lite or a 3DSi anytime soon.
At the end of the day, my reasons for getting the preorder came down to two things. First, I received a $50 Game Stop gift card along with other cash for my birthday. Also, I am genuinely excited to get my hands on the system itself and experience its features. I just hope I won’t regret this decision in the future. After all, Nintendo has failed to successfully execute 3D gaming twice in the past. Let’s hope the third time is the charm.
